I tried using your ML smarty plugin, but I still get the same error message I was getting with mbtruncate and truncate. My conclusion is that by some reason the <{$item.description}> constant doesn't accept any parameters.

Seems like there's nothing much to do now.

I'll keep on trying to find a way to make it work properly with EMLH.
