I installed the module and then uploaded my zip of smilies but nothing seems to have happened?? I don't see any of the new images.

Perhaps, it is caused by the problem of format.
- zip format
- image format
- or filesize

The only difference between the sample and my zip was that I had not edited the files. So I pre-edited and they worked.
NOW if the smilie is not selected to show under the text area, it won't show up in the post, only the code shows up.

in addition to that... if I turn on all the smilies to show under the text box they look fine in Firefox but in IE 7 they are on one line and it screws up the site layout.

are you using the SHoutbox? That is where they are all in one row, I forgot to put that in my post. They are okay on the forums, it's just on the Shoutbox.
