Perhaps, you have to edit core directly to achieve that.
Or you can add another authentication class into class/auth/ though I don't know it well

Why do you use 2.2.x from xoops.org?
It looks dead-ended verstion.
Any merits?
I recommend all XOOPSers to use 2.0.x-JP from xoopscube.org.
This might be the most stable and secure version I know.
