Have you ever thought of having pipes archive the images contained within the feeds? Maybe a joint(s) that downloads all images with specified IMG HTML codes or file extensions to a specified folder and then rewrites those img urls to the new folder location?

I say this because you could then create some real archives that could be complete even when (if) the original content website is long gone.

Also, have you looked at The Coral Content Distribution Network for some uses in your modules? Seems like this could really save some bandwidth and speed things up, especially with something like the above idea.
